This just in on the animal news front: Namibian Black Rhinos are in danger, and there’s something you can do to help. Basically, the Dallas Safari Club auctioned off a chance to hunt a Black Rhino and bring back the kill to the United States. This species is extremely vulnerable; there are only 5,000 left in the wild, and  if nothing changes, they can face extinction. file2281336842641

Why this matters: Entire species of animals are being lost year after year. It’s not just one country’s tragedy, but it’s the whole world’s tragedy. Our world exists in a tenuous, beautiful balance, and when animals go extinct, that balance is upset: food chains are disrupted, climates are affected, and other animals are endangered. This doesn’t just affect other animals; people are also affected. Remember singing along to The Lion King‘s “Circle of Life” when you were five? It’s like that.

What you can do: Sign petitions. The winner of this “prize” can’t do anything unless they get an import permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This petition is being sent straight to said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to pressure them into not allowing this permit to be granted. It’s super easy, super quick, and once you have signed it, you can spread the word via social media with the literal click of a button.

So there you are: The rhinos need help, and they can’t do it on their own. It’s up to you.
