Q: Hi Annalise, I really want to get involved with music. I love to sing, but I can’t afford to pay for lessons. How can I really learn and improve my skill without going broke?

A: Hey! There are so many ways to learn about and participate in making music without having to spend tons of money. One would be to join your schools choir; I am in mine, and I love it! It is a wonderful experience to be surrounded by other people who love music and are excited by it just as much as you are. Some schools also offer classes like piano lab, music theory, and even guitar, which would supply you with the instruments you need. Music theory can offer a great look into the details and structure of music composition. You could also look into joining a music club held after school. This often offers students an opportunity to perform in front of their peers.

If you want to learn on your own, there are tons of amazing, self-help books that you can follow. If you want to learn an instrument that you already own or that you can often borrow from someone, then YouTube can be your best friend. Take full advantage of its millions of how-to and basic-tip videos for your instrument overall and for specific songs. Best of luck to you with your musical endeavors!
