Q: Dear Annalise, I’m really smart but am afraid to tell my friends because they always make fun of the kids who get good grades and I don’t want to lose them. What should I do?
A: First off, if your “friends” stop liking you because you’re smart, they aren’t really your friends. Being smart is something you should NEVER be ashamed of. Too many girls try to play dumb to make friends and get a boyfriend. We all know one of them– the fake laugh, Valley girl laugh. It’s not fun to be around them, and you certainly don’t want to have to downplay yourself to be liked. So maybe next time you get an A on your paper or test don’t stuff it into the bottom of your backpack, but don’t shove it in their faces either. It’s fine to say, “I can’t believe I aced my math test.” If your friends judge you for being smart, they aren’t smart enough to see how great you are. Surround yourself with people who love you for you.
