I had the opportunity to talk with Michelle Blue, the owner and co-founder of Bené, to find out firsthand what the organization is all about:
How did Bené get started? What inspired it?
While I was a student at the University of Georgia, I had the opportunity to study abroad to Ghana. Forever changed by the experience and the girls that I met, my best friend Sasha and I were inspired to start Bené, a collection of scarves committed to help support girls in Ghana continue their education.
What is Bené’s mission?
When we started Bené, we knew that we wanted to make a difference in the girls lives that I met on my trip to Ghana. We knew that it had to be sustainable and something greater than the two of us. We have started with educating girls in Ghana and hope to support girls all around the world. When you educate girls, you’re not just educating them; you’re changing their lives, their family lives, and you’re contributing to their countries. When you think about what impact that really has, that can change the world. And if we can be apart of that, I think that’s awesome!
How many girls have been helped by Bené so far?
We have committed to sponsoring 5 girls to go through 3 years of secondary school. We make sure the girls receive tuition, books, supplies and uniforms for the girls so that they can continue their education. The girls have their own dreams and aspirations of becoming teachers, doctors, and nurses, and it’s great knowing that we are helping them make those dreams a reality.
How many different styles and products are available for purchase?
Our S/S’15 Collection offers five styles (skinny, infinity, rectangle, caftan, and kimono) in five different patterns. Each pattern is custom designed in house and named after one of the girls we help support. With each purchase, you receive a picture of the girl and are able to learn more about her story. The collection is bright, fun, and perfect for a casual day at the market or a beach cover-up.
