In case you missed it, #BooksArentDangerous, the social media campaign led by the authors of the Beautiful Creatures series, wrapped up this week to great success.
The idea was to take a picture with a book that saved your life, changed your life, or just a book that you’d recommend and then post it to your social media with the hashtag #BooksArentDangerous.
The best part? It’s all for a good cause. Dangerous Deception (the latest from co-authors Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia) has been released, and instead of a traditional marketing campaign, Stohl and Garcia decided to use their marketing budget to donate books to underprivileged schools and libraries in need. Their publishers, Little Brown Books for Young Readers, matched each hashtagged book selfie with a donation, meaning that the successful two-week campaign resulted in the donation of 5,000 books!
Since this is a campaign we can totally get behind, our very own founder, Jennifer Niven, kicked things off for Germ Magazine’s participation, posing with books like Judy Blume’s Forever and Ava Dellaria’s Love Letters to the Dead. In addition to donating books to areas in need, this campaign is special because it challenges those who are of the opinion that books (and the knowledge they represent) are a danger to the status quo and should be kept out of the hands of the masses (looking at you, Kim Jong-il).
We are incredibly glad the campaign went so well, and we can’t wait to see more like it in the future! If you missed out, here are some organizations that donate books to those in need, so you can go and get your charity on: AccessBooks.net; BooksForAmerica.org; WeGiveBooks.org.
Remember, #BooksArentDangerous, but ignorance is!
