After a deep snow,
our neighbor David built a giant wooden sled
for his sons and my brother and me.
Bundled in winter clothes,
we piled onto the slats and huddled for a ride
while David, our guide, sat at the helm.
We took flight down our icy street,
delighting in the speed,
yet fearing we might crash and be tossed asunder
and buried under the drifts.
But David, our captain,
kept us steady and on course
till we reached the bottom of the hill.
Amazed we had survived,
we jumped off the sled and grabbed the ropes
to tow our vessel back up the slope,
ready to take our chances again.
