If someone asked me what I was going to do this summer, I never would have imagined my answer would be, “I’m starting my own business.” My mom and I have really been obsessed with upcylcling T-shirts. It’s something we like to do together, and it’s fun, creative, and relaxing. We take old T-shirts, cut them into strips, and crochet them into things like bean bags and pet beds. We thought that we could really make something out of this hobby. We went on to create Raggle Dazzle Designs. We are going to sell upcycled crafts for kids, pets, and teens, and I’m going to save the money I earn for college.
Because Germ is one of my other passions, I thought I’d bring these two Bright Places together and share over the next few months how a 13-year-old entrepreneur can create a college fund out of summer fun. The first step of my journey toward owning my own business was choosing a name and getting a logo. Marketing genius and fellow Germ writer Cat Zohar told us about www.fiverr.com and www.freelancer.com. These are great sites for teens because you can get professional help with your projects for a very low cost.
First, we checked out Fiverr, where people post services they are willing to do starting at $5, such as making a circular pin design. After we looked on Fiverr and decided that we didn’t really find what we were looking for, we decided to look on Freelancer.
I could tell that Freelancer was the site I wanted to use for designing my logo. When you first go onto the site, you can choose to create a project. After that, all you have to do is fill out details about what you want your design to look like and how much you are willing to pay. Within seconds, people are bidding to work on your design. Once this starts, you can look at their ratings, preview their designs, and chat with each bidder. This helps you to decide which person you want to hire to create your design. The person I worked with was really nice and helpful. My mom and I talked with him and came up with an idea for the logo. He then worked on it and sent us a sample copy. If there was something that we wanted to change, he would go back and fix it. This process continued for about 45 minutes until we came up with the finished design with the final cost of $30.
Overall, this was a really great experience. I have only just begun my journey in creating Raggle Dazzle Designs. Finding and creating the logo was an amazing experience, and I am really happy with how it came out. I am excited to start the next part of my business and can really see it going far.
