Can one day on the dazzling streets of New Orleans really change your entire life? In Mia Garcia’s debut novel, Even If the Sky Falls, Julie — a teenage girl who is in desperate search for adventure and diversity in her life — goes on an average trip to new Orleans with her church group to serve the community; but, what she discovers is so much more spectacular than she could have ever imagined. Not only does she take risks by ditching her group to explore the festivities along every side street, but she also meets the mysterious and ruggedly handsome Miles and his two best friends, Danny and Taj. Now, with no rules to follow and no looking back, Julie uses the small amount of time she has in New Orleans to explore the diverse surroundings, act spontaneously, and perhaps even fall for a stranger whom she has known for less than twenty-four hours.
Even If the Sky Falls is a novel unlike any that I have ever read before. From the festive Mardi Gras parties to the fantastical mysteries of New Orleans, this novel comes to life for readers and will consume audiences entirely. From page one, you already feel as if you are traveling around New Orleans for yourself, and each character appears to be incredibly realistic — as well as someone you feel deeply connected to. Not only is the setting perfectly crafted, but the numerous pop culture references make the reading experience even more interesting and relatable for teen audiences.
While reading the novel, I had little to no complaints in regards to the character development, plot, or dialogue between the characters. The only aspect of this magnificent tale that I felt was slightly unrealistic was the fact that Miles and Julie had such an instant connection. Even from first glances, they seem to already be a couple, which doesn’t occur too often in real life. Despite that one minor setback, the entirety of the novel is both extremely comical and at times heartbreaking.
A swoon-worthy romance and a tale of adventure and risks, Even If the Sky Falls is a novel that can truly be called one-of-a-kind. For fans of Robyn Schneider’s The Beginning of Everything and Shalanda Stanley’s Drowning Is Inevitable, Mia Garcia’s Even If the Sky Falls is sure to be a new favorite addition to their coming-of-age book collection. Pick up your copy of Even If the Sky Falls and journey with Julie and Miles as they dare to do the unthinkable and fall in love in the most unlikely of ways.
