How do we view people with disabilities? Are we embarrassed by them? Are we embarrassed to speak about them? To play and laugh with them like we would with any other person?
Sometimes I think that we show too much sympathy. We want to be supportive, and we are afraid to hurt their feelings; we want to avoid showing them that we think they are not like us. (Because, let’s be honest, that’s what society as a whole often thinks.)
With this overprotective attitude, we forget the most important thing out there: They are just like us. They are us.
How can we show them that they aren’t different? Try to play with them. Make them laugh. Bring them happiness. Most of all, erase the pitiful expression from your face. Let’s see them through the eyes of a child.
They are just like the rest of us.
