Broken bird on a chain.
Unfree Unclean
Stretching Reaching
Straining veins
he can’t keep you
Don’t let him beat you
You can be free broken bird
Your cries are heard
Don’t dwell in your cage of fear and rage
Be untamed, break the chains
he’ll feel pain
Secrets kept are souls kept clenched
he can’t own your soul
Life is what you make it
he can’t take it
Broken
Bird
Fly

Elizabeth Nichols is a 21-year-old caffeine addict. She just completed Nanowrimo because the only thing that she loves more than reading is writing. She’s currently been to 12 countries, she’s a certified sign language interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and she lives life flying by the seat of her pants, screaming “Hakuna Matata.” Her goal in life is for everyone to someday understand all of her book and movie quotes, but she’s not holding her breath. “Stay golden, Ponyboy.”
Rachel Kertz was born in a small town in Missouri in 1988. While earning her degree at Southeast Missouri State University, she became interested in photography and began using her commutes as excuses to go on long drives through the rural countrysides, hoping to find locations and abandoned houses to photograph. She hopes to convey relatable stories in her images that speak to her audience on themes such as loneliness, love, exploration, and the feeling of being alone in unconventionally beautiful places.
