Once a boy wanted to see my soul, but he never
tried asking me to show him.
He looked at my eyes like they really were windows,
but to his dismay, they were one-way only.
I learnt from an early age to never let anyone
see inside.
He asked questions with silence, and
I’ll never stop wondering what he would’ve said
if he ever tried opening his mouth.
I’d always have someone to walk me home at night.
Straight to my door, with a goodbye said with words
and nothing else.
Our lips never came close to touching. Not even once.
There was depth in his thoughts, but his words
always seemed shallow.
The most prominent memory I have was also our last.
Lying on a hill under the moonlight,
not a star in sight.
Not touching; never touching.
He said we could work this out. That we would work out.
I smiled, but he didn’t see. And he never did.
He was just another risk from which I chose
to walk away from.
