When you see a model strutting down the runway, you marvel at her grace, notice her beauty, and gaze upon up-and-coming styles. Today, we can do all those things, including celebrating the fact that the catwalk’s newest member is a young woman with Down syndrome.

Jamie Brewer, actress from the popular show American Horror Story, is the first ever runway model with Down syndrome. Wearing clothing from fashion designer Carrie Hammers, Brewer, along with other chosen women who were thought to make good role models, showed off their beauty at New York Fashion Week.

Hammers put together the collection, including Brewer in the mix, for a campaign called “Role Models not Runway Models.” It was created to inspire young people to be confident with themselves and who they are. Hammers received hundreds of messages and notes saying how wonderful she is for putting this together and how her collection has made such a positive impact on people.

Brewer herself has gotten a large amount of praise as well. People are looking up to her, saying things like, “Hey if she can do it, so can I.” She is being considered a role model and activist for all kinds of people with varying intellectual and physical disabilities.

People adore Jamie Brewer because she is making a positive difference in the world, one that will make young girls today feel better about themselves and be more confident. Brewer has broken the typical “model status” stereotype and turned it into something much better for society. Beauty isn’t what is showing on the outside; but, instead, it’s what’s inside of you.
