My stomach growls for the sixth time in three minutes. It’s late at night, and I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast. I would go grab food from the kitchen, but the kitchen is full of screams and shattering dishes and roaring hurt disguised as anger. The kitchen is as it always is, and I have never been brave enough to face it.

I have never been brave at all.

So instead, I slip out my window, closing it softly behind me, and I pretend that the quiet calm of the night is something that might belong to me one day.
