*NOTE: I was sent Starr Fall in return for an honest review and that is what I have written. All opinions are my own and are completely truthful.*

Kim Briggs’ debut YA novel truly is a wonderful start to the series. Starr Fall is the first book in a new Young Adult/Fantasy series by Kim Briggs. It tells the story of Starr, a model student with a typical teenager’s life until the Organisation decides they want her to be an assassin. In a fight for her freedom, she goes on the run from the Organisation, and the last thing she expected was to fall in love with the mysterious Christian along the way.

From the start of the book, I got the impression that this would be a romance “chick lit” genre of book since it sets the scene of boy talk and sleepovers. I didn’t expect that within 30 pages, the seemingly happy chick lit vibe would be drastically turned into a completely action-packed novel that would leave me on the edge of my seat.

I can honestly say that I’ve never read anything like this book; the plot behind it is wonderfully unique, and it’s a breath of fresh air that’s needed in the YA genre. The characters are so relatable and fun that you can’t help but get attached to them and become completely immersed in their story.

Starr was such a stand-out female protagonist. She has such a wonderful sense of humour, and even when everything goes downhill for her, I still felt that I could relate to her and felt extremely invested in everything that happened to her.

The development of Christian is also one of the best parts of this book. Kim Briggs creates his character so beautifully that you can’t help but fall in love with him. Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say that the change and progress of his character from the start of the book to the end is wonderful to see within the novel.

There is a case of “instant love” in the book, which can sometimes be a little unbelievable and boring in YA. However, in Starr Fall it is completely the opposite; it works so well within the novel and is entirely believable. They go through so much that I think it would be hard not to fall in love! I loved this because it really adds a twist to the already popular genre, which is just what everyone has been waiting for.

Starr Fall leaves you with so many questions that it’s a wonder anyone will be able to wait until January for the second book. There are so many intricate aspects in the novel that questions flood your mind. Who are the Organisation? Does Christian have anything to do with them? What about Starr’s grandparents? The questions stay with you long after finishing and keep you involved even after you’re done with the book!

Kim Briggs’ novel truly is a wonderful debut. From start to finish I was hooked, and all I could think about was what could possibly happen next. From believable characters to a brilliant new aspect of YA narrative, if you love action-packed thrillers, then this is the book for you! Now, to begin the wait until book 2 is out!

Starr Fall: Book 1 in the Starr Fall series is out on all eBook platforms on November 4, 2016.
