So today I’ve decided to write about music, specifically new music — and even more specifically, Alt-J’s new album, This Is All Yours.
First of all, I’m not a huge fan of indie music, so the glory that is Alt-J is a new discovery for me. I had heard some of their earlier songs, but my initial reaction had been, “Not bad, but eeeeh.“
I was surprised by the fact that I liked this new album of theirs as much as I did. It’s hard to describe, but I’ll try. In autumn, I’m all about being cozy. The weather is cold and rainy and foggy, and all I need is a little bit of warmth and comfort. This Is All Yours feels something like that. It reminds me of a good cup of steaming tea, a tartan blanket, a fireplace, and a book.
It’s calm and quite slow, but in my opinion we all need a little bit of stop signals in our lives sometimes. We need something that makes us just stop and enjoy ourselves — something that makes us tune out all the noises around us. This music is also perfect for this season because sometimes the cold and the grey of autumn can have a depressing influence on people. Alt-J’s sound definitely fosters a sense of comfort.
I love the words, I adore the instruments, and overall I think this will be my go-to album this season.
